Formaldehyde is a gas with a pungent smell . This compound is the simplest member of the aldehyde group. This gas is easily formed from the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing compounds. Formaldehyde, although gaseous at room temperature, dissolves well in water. Formaldehyde is usually supplied as a 37% aqueous solution called formalin.

Gloves and goggles should be used when working with formaldehyde. If formaldehyde is stored for a long time, paraformaldehyde is produced.
